Itinerary

On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, your Tira Travels guide will transfer you north along the coastal highway toward Chilaw, a fishing town on the northwest coast approximately 90 kilometres from Colombo. Your first Ramayana Trail stop is the Munneswaram Temple complex, one of the five ancient Shiva temples of Sri Lanka dating back over 1,000 years. According to Ramayana tradition, Lord Rama worshipped at Munneswaram to seek penance after defeating King Ravana. The complex includes the main Shiva shrine, a Kali Amman shrine, a Ganesh shrine, and a Vishnu shrine. Continue northeast along the coastal highway to Trincomalee on the eastern coast, a natural harbour city on the Bay of Bengal. Check in to your hotel with evening views over the ocean. Overnight in Trincomalee.

Begin the morning at the Koneswaram Temple, built on Swami Rock, a granite promontory rising 130 meters above the Indian Ocean on the northern tip of Trincomalee. This ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is one of the Pancha Ishwarams of Sri Lanka, the five sacred Shiva temples believed to have been built by Ravana himself. The temple was partially destroyed by the Portuguese in 1622 and later rebuilt. The nearby Shankari Devi Temple is another sacred site on the Swami Rock headland. In the afternoon, visit Pigeon Island National Park, located 1 kilometer offshore from Nilaveli Beach. The marine park covers 471 hectares and contains two small islands surrounded by coral reefs. The park is home to blacktip reef sharks, reef fish, sea turtles, and one of the largest and best-preserved coral reef systems in Sri Lanka. Overnight in Trincomalee.

Depart Trincomalee and travel southwest through the North Central Province toward Kandy, stopping at Dunuwila near Medirigiriya. Dunuwila is the site where, according to the Ramayana, Lord Rama launched the Brahmastra, the most powerful divine weapon in Hindu mythology, to defeat King Ravana. The landscape here is one of the most visually striking in the North Central Province, with the Lakegala rock formation rising sharply from the surrounding forest. Continue to Kandy, arriving in the late afternoon. Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic for the evening pooja ceremony. Unlike the daytime visits of other packages, the evening pooja at Sri Dalada Maligawa is a ceremonial ritual performed three times daily at dawn, midday, and dusk, with traditional drumming and offerings. Overnight in Kandy.

After breakfast, depart Kandy via the hill country highway toward Nuwara Eliya. En route, stop at a tea plantation and factory in the Ramboda area at approximately 1,200 metres elevation. The Ramboda area produces mid-grown Ceylon tea, processed using the CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) method which produces a stronger, brisker flavour profile compared to the orthodox method used in high-grown estates. Visit Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple at Ramboda, a relatively recent temple built at the site where Hanuman is believed to have rested and searched for Sita during his mission across Sri Lanka. Arriving in Nuwara Eliya, visit the Seetha Amman Temple at Sita Eliya, set on the banks of the Sita Ganga river where Sita was held captive by Ravana, and the Ashok Vatika garden where Sita waited for rescue. Also visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, established in 1884 at 1,745 metres elevation, covering 28 hectares and containing over 10,000 plant species. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Depart Nuwara Eliya early and travel southeast toward Ella. Stop at Ravana Falls, a cascade on the Belihul Oya river dropping approximately 25 metres down a rocky cliff face, named after King Ravana and believed in Ramayana tradition to be a location used by Ravana. Continue to Ravana Cave in Ella, a natural cave in the hillside above the Ella town area, traditionally identified as a hiding place used by King Ravana. Continue south to Kataragama, a multi-religious pilgrimage town in the Southern Province considered sacred by Buddhists, Hindus, and indigenous Vedda communities. The Kataragama Temple complex is dedicated to Lord Skanda (Murugan), the Hindu deity of war, and draws pilgrims from across South Asia. The complex includes the Maha Devale (main shrine), the Kiri Vehera Buddhist stupa dating to the 1st century BC, and the Kataragama Mosque serving the Muslim community. Check in to your hotel near Yala National Park for your overnight stay.

Begin the day with an early morning safari at Yala National Park. Yala is Sri Lanka's most visited national park, covering 979 square kilometres in the Southeast. Block 1, the area open to tourism, has the highest recorded density of leopards of any protected area in the world, with an estimated 35 to 40 leopards resident in the block. Other wildlife commonly encountered includes Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, water buffalo, spotted deer, and over 215 bird species, including the painted stork, Indian peafowl, and lesser adjutant. After the safari, transfer northwest to Colombo via the Southern Expressway. On arrival in Colombo, visit the Colombo Aranjeyanar Temple on Kotahena Street, an important Hindu temple in the city, and the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, a Buddhist temple 11 kilometers from central Colombo where Lord Buddha is believed to have visited during his third visit to Sri Lanka. Overnight in Colombo.

After breakfast, transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure. The drive from central Colombo takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. For those with afternoon departures, optional morning visits include the Pettah Floating Market, the Dutch Period Museum on Prince Street in the Pettah district, or the Colombo National Museum on Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, which houses the royal regalia of the last Kandyan king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinha.
