Itinerary

On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, your Tira Travels guide will meet you and transfer you north-east toward Kandy via Pinnawala. Your first stop is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975 on the banks of the Maha Oya River, currently home to over 70 Sri Lankan elephants, including calves, juveniles, and adults. You will have the opportunity to observe the twice-daily river bathing session, where the herd descends to the river at 10am and 2pm. After Pinnawala, continue to Kandy — Sri Lanka's last royal capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city arriving in the early evening. Overnight in Kandy.

Begin the morning with a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) on the shores of Kandy Lake — the most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka, believed to house the tooth relic of the Buddha. After the temple, depart south through the central highlands toward Nuwara Eliya, stopping at a working tea estate and factory along the way to learn about the Ceylon tea production process from fresh leaf to the finished product. Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 meters above sea level, giving it a cool climate unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka, earning it the colonial-era name "Little England." Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Depart early for Ella, a hill town at 1,041 meters known for its dramatic valley views and tea-covered slopes. Visit the Nine Arch Bridge  a colonial-era stone viaduct built in 1921 spanning 91 meters across a jungle valley, one of the most photographed locations in Sri Lanka. Continue to Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views across the Ella Gap, then descend toward Kitulgala on the Kelani River, a whitewater rafting destination and the filming location of the 1957 film Bridge on the River Kwai. Transfer onward to Colombo for your final overnight stay.

After breakfast, a brief city orientation of Colombo is available before your departure transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport. Colombo highlights on the transfer route include the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, the Galle Face Green seafront promenade, and the Pettah street market district. Transfer time from central Colombo to the airport is approximately 45 minutes.
