Ella: A Scenic Escape in the Hills

Ella Sri Lanka: Complete Travel Guide

Ella is a hill town in the Badulla District of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, situated at 1,041 metres above sea level in the central highlands. The town sits at the southern edge of the hill country, at the top of the Ella Gap, a natural break in the mountain ridge that channels winds from the southern coast and creates a distinctive microclimate cooler than the coastal lowlands by 8 to 10 degrees Celsius year-round. Ella is connected to the national rail network via the Kandy to Badulla railway line, one of the most scenic train journeys in Asia, and is accessible by road from Colombo in approximately 5.5 hours via the Southern Expressway and the Wellawaya junction. The town has grown significantly as a travel destination since 2010, with a concentration of independent cafes, guesthouses, yoga studios, and viewpoint trails within walking distance of the main Ella Road.

Nine Arch Bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge is a railway viaduct on the Kandy to Badulla line located 2 kilometres from Ella town centre near the Demodara railway station. The bridge was constructed between 1919 and 1921 using brick and hydraulic lime cement without any steel reinforcement, after steel supplies from Britain were diverted to the World War One effort. The construction was led by a local builder named P.K. Appuhami working under the supervision of British engineers. The completed structure spans 91 metres across a jungle valley on nine arches, each rising 24 metres from the valley floor, carrying the single-track railway line at a height of 24 metres above the stream below. The bridge is best viewed from two points: the jungle path below the arches, which requires a 10-minute walk from the Ella Road, and the tea field above the bridge accessible via a path from the Demodara side. Trains cross the bridge on the Kandy to Badulla service, operating twice daily in each direction. The 8:47am departure from Ella station crosses the bridge at approximately 9:00am and is the most photographed crossing of the day.

Little Adam’s Peak

Little Adam’s Peak is a 1,141-metre summit located 2.5 kilometres south of Ella town centre, accessible via a trail beginning at the 98 Acres Resort on the Passara Road. The hike gains approximately 100 metres of elevation from the valley floor and takes 30 to 45 minutes at a moderate pace, passing through active tea fields managed by smallholder farmers who supply leaf to the Hali-Ela and Uva Halpewatte tea factories. The summit is a narrow rocky ridge offering a 360-degree panoramic view: the Ella Gap and the southern coastal plain to the south, the Namunukula range (2,036 metres) to the east, Ella Rock (1,041 metres) to the north, and the Uva highland plateau to the west. The trail is open year-round and is accessible to walkers of average fitness without specialist equipment. Sunrise hikes departing at 5:30am provide views of cloud inversion in the Ella Gap, where a sea of cloud fills the valley below while the summit remains clear.

Ella Rock

Ella Rock is a granite peak rising to 1,041 metres directly north of Ella town, accessible via a trail beginning at the Ella railway station. The hike follows the railway line north from Ella station for approximately 1.5 kilometres before ascending steeply through pine forest and tea estate to the summit. The total return hike takes 3 to 4 hours and gains 400 metres of elevation from the town. A local guide is recommended as the trail is unmarked in sections. The summit offers direct views into the Ella Gap to the south and across the Uva Basin to the north and east. Ella Rock should not be confused with Little Adam’s Peak, which is a separate and more accessible summit to the south.

Ravana Falls

Ravana Falls is a waterfall on the Belihul Oya river located 6 kilometres south of Ella town on the Wellawaya Road (A23). The falls drop approximately 25 metres down a wide rock face into a natural pool accessible for swimming in the dry season. The waterfall is named after King Ravana of the Ramayana epic, and the Ravana Cave, located in the hillside above Ella town, is traditionally identified as a location used by Ravana. A secondary waterfall called Bambarakanda Falls, the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka at 263 metres, is located 35 kilometres northwest of Ella near Kalupahana and is accessible as a half-day excursion from Ella.

Tea Estates and Ceylon Tea

The Ella area sits within the Uva tea growing region, one of six recognised regional designations of Ceylon tea. Uva teas are grown at elevations between 900 and 1,600 metres on the eastern slopes of the central highlands, exposed to the northeast monsoon between July and September. This seasonal wind creates a dry, stress-inducing period for the tea bushes that concentrates flavour compounds in the leaf, producing a distinctive Uva character described as menthol-like with a bright, brisk flavour. The Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory, located 8 kilometres from Ella on the Passara Road, offers guided tours of the full orthodox production process including withering, rolling, oxidation, firing, and grading. The factory produces black tea sold under the Uva Halpewatte brand and in bulk to international tea blenders. Visiting between July and September allows you to observe peak harvest season when the maximum number of tea pickers are working the fields.

Ella Gap and Climate

The Ella Gap is a natural valley opening in the southern escarpment of the central highlands, running approximately 15 kilometres from the Ella town area to the lowland plains near Wellawaya. The gap creates a wind channel that draws moisture-laden air from the southern coast into the highlands during the southwest monsoon (May to September) and from the northeast during the northeast monsoon (October to January). This dual monsoon exposure means Ella receives rainfall throughout the year and rarely experiences the prolonged dry periods affecting coastal Sri Lanka. Average daytime temperatures in Ella range from 18 to 26 degrees Celsius year-round, with nights dropping to 14 to 16 degrees. The coolest and clearest months are January to March, making this the peak tourist season in Ella.

Getting to Ella

Ella is served by the Kandy to Badulla railway line, with two express services daily in each direction. The most popular train journey is from Kandy to Ella, taking approximately 6 to 7 hours and passing through Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya), Haputale, and Bandarawela. Seats in the observation car (car 48 or 49 on ExpoRail services) provide open viewing platforms and must be booked in advance through the Sri Lanka Railways website or ExpoRail directly. Second and third class seats are available without advance booking but offer less comfortable conditions on the 6-hour journey. By road, Ella is 225 kilometres from Colombo via the Southern Expressway and A2/A4 highway through Wellawaya, taking approximately 5 to 5.5 hours by private vehicle. The road via Kandy and Nuwara Eliya is approximately 280 kilometres and takes 6 to 7 hours but passes through the full hill country landscape.

Best Time to Visit Ella

January to March is the driest and clearest period in Ella, with the best conditions for hiking and photography. April brings the inter-monsoon period with occasional afternoon showers. The southwest monsoon arrives in May and brings heavier rainfall through June and July, though mornings are often clear. August and September are the peak tea harvest months with active picking in the fields. October to December sees the northeast monsoon bringing rainfall to the eastern slopes while the western approaches to Ella remain relatively dry. Ella is a year-round destination and never fully closes for weather, but travellers seeking guaranteed clear skies for Nine Arch Bridge photography should target January, February, or the early morning hours of any month before cloud builds in the afternoon.
